How Forensic Examiners Compare Footwear

A footwear examiner may compare questioned impressions with test impressions made from a known shoe.

The examination can consider:

  • Accidental characteristics – cuts, scratches, missing pieces, or other acquired features.

The impression should be preserved using an appropriate recovery method based on the surface and type of evidence.
